Richard G. Lugar Plaza
Indianapolis Hyderabad Sister City Committee was delighted to join the inauguration of Richard G Lugar Plaza at the City County Building in Indianapolis on Thursday, October 11, 2018. The new Plaza is named to honor former mayor and senator, Richard G Lugar, and his contributions to the city of Indianapolis. Mayor Joe Hogsett and former Mayor Greg Ballard and Clay Robbins, Chief Executive Officer of Lily Endowment Inc. led the inauguration of the $9 million Plaza located on the south side of City County Building. Former Mayor Lugar graced the event by his presence during the ribbon cutting ceremony. "We wanted to become a city that attracted the attention of the world, that had leadership and that had opportunities and that remains a perspective of Mayor Hogsett and the council and the Chamber of Commerce," former Mayor Lugar said.
The work on this project had commenced in 2017. The Plaza is redesigned to hold up to 1,500 people for community events and programs. It also depicts artwork showcasing Indianapolis’ sister cities. There is a large shade structure with leisure swings underneath it, interactive water feature and other amenities like movable tables, chairs, bike racks, and free public Wi-Fi.
The Plaza is now open as a dedicated place to host community and networking events. IIBC looks forward to utilizing this space for its future events.
